Lawmakers Demand Status Update on Storm Safety Study for Rockaway Residents

Lawmakers demanded a status update from the Army Corps of Engineers regarding a study geared to keeping Rockaway residents safe.

Senator Chuck Schumer and Assemblyman Phil Goldfeder say residents deserve details on the Rockaway reformulation study. The goal of the study is to better protect the Rockaway Penninsula from storms.

The lawmakers also urged the Army Corps to hold public meetings allowing people impacted by Hurricane Sandy to provide input.

Schumer pushed for federal funding for the project and says despite the bill being passed into law more than two years ago, the Army Corps has not yet released a draft to the public.

“We’re here today to push them over the finish line and urge them to move on this next step as quickly as possible,” said Schumer at a Friday press conference.

“We want to start action. We want to roll up our sleeves and get things done so we can all feel a lot safer,” said Hank Iori with the Belle Harbor Property Owners Association.

NY1 reached out to The Army Corps of Engineers for comment, but haven’t heard back yet.
